Northallerton Evangelical Church

History of Northallerton Evangelical Church
Northallerton Evangelical Church traces its origins back to 1964 when a small number met in a bible study group.  Many had sat under the ministry of Paul Cook at the Baptist Church in Northallerton before he moved to Shepshed.  A Sunday morning service was started in 1965 and the church was formed in November of that year.  John Legg was appointed Pastor of NEC whilst also pastoring the Independent Congregational Church at Reeth.
Early meetings were held in homes, at a hall in Alverton Lane and from January 1970 at the Women’s Institute Hall in Romanby.  The official opening of our present building in the High Street took place in June 1979.
John Legg continued as Pastor of the church until 1986 when he moved to Shrewsbury. Since then Leslie Smith was Pastor from 1989 to 1992 and Richard Chester was the teaching elder for two years from 1997.
Although at present we do not have a Pastor, we are served by many men who preach the Word of God with great faithfulness.  Some of these visit us just once or twice a year while others come more often and are able provide consecutive Bible teaching.
